Abstract
This study examines the transformation of Namdaemun Station, which began operations in 1900 on the Gyeongin Railway, into the nation's largest distribution hub following the opening of the Gyeongbu Railway. It further explores how, after being renamed Gyeongseong Station in 1923, the station premises came to house the Gyeongseong Municipal Fish Market and later the Central Wholesale Market. Namdaemun Station served as the primary railway terminal through which all goods destined for the consumer city of Gyeongseong were gathered. Goods were transported not only from across Korea but also from countries such as Japan, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Austria. On the southern side of the station premises, the Customs Warehouse under the General Tax Office(總稅務司廳) was established, along with the opening of the Namdaemun Branch Office(南大門 出張所). A s b oth passenger a nd f reight t raffic increasingly c onverged a t Namdaemun Station during the 1910s, the need for a new station building became apparent. However, construction was completed in 1925. In 1928, the Gyeongseong Municipal Fish Market was established within the Gyeongseong Station premises. This market consolidated three existing fish markets in the city. The station site was selected for its convenient transportation links, potential for future expansion, sanitary and safe conditions, and reduced construction costs. Through negotiations with the Railway Bureau, the Gyeongseongboo(京城府) began operating the fish market within the station premises. With the expansion of Gyeongseong’s administrative district in 1936 and a rising demand for seafood and foodstuffs, the Gyeongseongboo accelerated plans to establish a Central Wholesale Market to stabilize supply and prices. A survey committee was formed to oversee the project, headed by the Bu-yoon(府尹; Head of the Prefecture) of Gyeongseong and comprising officials from the Government-General of Korea's Bureau of Industry, the Railway Bureau, and the police. Among the candidate sites for the market, Gyeongseong Station was favored due to its unrestricted freight access, central location, and the presence of the existing fish market, which allowed for cost savings. Ultimately, in 1939, the municipality established the Central Wholesale Market-also known as the "Terminal Station Market"-within the Gyeongseong Station premises. After Korea’s liberation, Seoul Station continued to see growth in passenger transport, but its freight functions gradually dispersed to other stations such as Yeongdeungpo, Cheongnyangni, and Wangsimni. In line with this shift, the fresh fish and produce sections of the Central Wholesale Market located within Seoul Station were relocated in 1975 to areas near Noryangjin and Yongsan Stations. The site formerly occupied by the market was redeveloped into Uijuro Park, which opened in 1976.
