Abstract
This study examines how different types of activities performed during travel—categorized as enjoyment, productivity, or none—influence commuters’ perceptions of worthwhile travel time (WTT) in Seoul. A total of 1,278 in-trip activities were collected from 550 respondents, and differences in subjective travel-time value were analyzed based on activity types, travel mode, travel time, and individual characteristics. The overall perceived usefulness of travel time averaged 3.82 out of 5, indicating that travel time is increasingly regarded as a period that can provide value beyond mere movement. Enjoyment activities (3.91) and productive activities (3.74) were evaluated significantly higher than no activity (2.98) (p<0.01). Among travel modes, subway users reported the highest perceived value (3.97), followed by bus (3.85) and private car users (3.68). Ordered Logit estimates confirmed that activity engagement is the most influential determinant of WTT, while travel distance, inter-regional commuting, and income levels showed limited or nonsignificant effects. An extended model focusing on public transportation further revealed that crowding significantly diminishes the positive effect of in-trip activities on WTT. These findings suggest that perceptions of travel-time value are shaped less by travel mode or travel duration and more by the types of activities travelers can perform and the conditions under which such activities become feasible, such as crowding and on-board comfort.
