Abstract

National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics(NINJAL) is concerned about the overuse of loanwords in Japanese language, it established The Loanwords Committee, with publishing ‘A suggestion of using substitute words instead for loanwords’ in 2006. This report propose to use native Japanese vocabulary, including Japanese characters, instead of using the 176 loanwords. The article will discuss several questions, such as how the 176 loanwords were selected in NINJAL's report using a newspaper database as well as the frequency of the appearance of these words in the newspapers, based on the hypothesis that a number of loanwords showing a higher degree of comprehension by NINJAL’s preliminary survey are more likely to be used in our daily conversation. This report also insist that Loanwords and Japanese characters be used separately with distinct meanings from each other. In other words, for this reason, Japanese Language should use both loanwords and Japanese characters.
