Abstract

The space in literature is important work to read the emotions or images connected with the space together rather than physical space itself. The lyrics「Wagayado(わが宿)」, covered in this paper, is a compound word of 「Yado(宿)」with the meaning of "home", and it's an expression especially used methodically in『The Tale of Genji』. Originally, as there are two kinds of meaning in the term, 「Yado(宿)」 which is 「Yado(ヤド)」used by Kana of Kōrui(甲類) with the meanings of the exterior of a building, the outside or garden of a building, or the entrance of a building, the entrance of a house, and is 「Yado(ヤド)」used by Kana of Otsurui(乙類) with meaning of 'home', the two are gradually confused, and in Heian period, Yado(宿)」has a different meaning than "garden." In particular, 「Yado(宿)」 in Monokatari' works in Heian has a the meaning as a space expression that evokes strong longing for the one in the situation of the absence of a person. In addition, the expression 「Wayagado(わが宿)」 is used as a central lyrics in Waka, in which the owner (a father who has a daughter reaching a marriageable age) of the mansion urges the visit of a person who whom he wants to have as his son-in-law. The fact that the son-in-law appreciates the scenery of the season with the writer of Waka means marriage. Especially, as it placed a stylistic and methodical Waka using the lyrics of 「Wayagado(わが宿)」and 「Wisteria flower」 in 『The Tale of Genji』 for the story that the Fujiwaras makes the one who is Genji their son-in-law, it portrays an impressive scene of the Wisteria Festival.
