遠藤周作の文学は、神を探求する文学として位置づけられているし、深い河も例外ではない。しかし、彼は何よりも人間について深く考えながら、他者との疎通を追求してきた作家である。本稿では、登場人物の内面世界と、彼らの移動する空間に注目して深い河を考察してみた。印度は、清浄と不潔、神聖と卑猥、慈悲と残忍とが混在し共存している空間である。このような分明でない境界は、なにもかも画するヨーロッパの思考方式を壊して、印度という空間を開いた空間に機能させる。病苦や痛みに耐えながらも、萎びた乳房から人間に乳を与えている女神、どんな醜い人間もすべて拒まず受け入れて流れる河、次の生涯を求めながら死んでいく人々を手伝う大津の行為に共通するのは、愛である。印度では神だけでなく自然と人間など、すべてのものが愛で繋がっているのである。遠藤周作が死を前にして渾身の力を注いだ深い河は、人間にとって本当に必要なもの、根源的で切実なものについて力説している。愛の不毛の地で愛の回復を叫ぶことによって、遠藤文学の根幹をなすのが、愛の実践であることを見せる。深い河は、自分だけが正しいというエゴイズムに陥って、お互いに憎んで暴力が絶えない、今の我々の現実を振り返させる作品である。
Abstract
Endo Shusaku's literature is known to study god and Deep River also doesn't deviate from this study field. But most of all, he was the writer who deeply thought about human and sought communication with other people. But so far, these aspects have been overlooked. In this research, I deeply thought about Deep River, focusing on character's story and the place they visit. India is the place where cleanness and dirtiness, divinity and pornography, and mercy and cruelty coexist. This equivocality of boundary tears down European's dichotomous way of thinking which draws boundary in everything,and makes India as the open place. Also in India, nature god, and human all meet in the place of love. Endo Shusaku's Deep River, which he gathered his energies on, confronted by death emphasizes what is the most sourceful and earnest to human. It shows what forms basis of Endo Shusaku's literature is practice of love. Deep River makes us look back our present situation where people hate each other and violence doesn't stop in egoism that only myself is correct.
