Abstract
This paper examines the functionality of emoticons as an instrument of online communication and Korean-Japanese translation of texts that have emoticons. Emoticons are representation in the form of letters or symbols of various tools adopted by Internet users as a means of nonverbal communication during face-to-face speech such as facial expression or intonation. This paper analyzes Facebook posts written by two females (A:Korean resident in her twenties; B: Japanese resident in her thirties) fluent in both Korean and Japanese with a focus on posts, each of which contains both Korean and Japanese texts and emoticons from the two countries. The use of emoticons is approached from the perspective of the politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987). As a result, this study pays attention to what communicative roles emoticons play within texts. The posts analyzed herein were uploaded approximately for one year from August 2011 by two native Korean speakers. They are noteworthy because the posts include both Korean and Japanese and self -translated emoticons. According to the analysis method, the functions of emoticons are classified on the basis of the politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1978). The analysis shows that A's Korean posts used emoticons mostly to achieve clear expression or bond with readers. Accordingly, her posts are characterized by the frequent use of symbols such as “...” or “!” and many emoticons that signify the sound of laughter such as “ㅋㅋㅋ” or facial expressions. In comparison, the Japanese emoticons found in Japanese texts, called “Kaomoji (顔文字)”, were applied mainly to convey diverse emotions directly and thereby bond with readers. Unlike A, B frequently employed in her Korean posts facial-expression emoticons that facilitate the bonding process. However, B used in her Japanese posts many of such emoticons as “(淚)” and “(笑)” for clear expression. It can be said that these discrepancies have resulted from the current locations of A and B and which country between Korea and Japan they chose as an “inner circle” in their communication.
