Abstract
This study analyzes the discourse on syphilis in The Yomiuri Shimbun and The Chosun Ilbo to reveal the truth behind the imperial ruling discourse and examines the distinctiveness and differences of the modernization process of Korea and Japan. As a result of the state-regulated prostitution, syphilis emerged as a disease of the era and newspapers began to discourse on it. In the discourse on syphilis, The Yomiuri Shimbun of Japan carried more articles and advertisements than Joseon newspapers did, which means sexually-transmitted diseases caused many problems in the Japanese daily life. In the 1920s, many of the articles and advertisements on the Japanese newspapers covered venereal diseases, and most of the contents were on how to protect women from these diseases. It indicates that the objects of national regulation and control were mostly males. On the contrary, The Chosun Ilbo did not run as many articles on syphilis as its Japanese counterpart did. However, most of the articles related to venereal diseases targeted at ordinary women, while the advertisements for the treatment were intended for ordinary men. This fact indicates that hygiene discourse was bound up with commercialism during the Japanese colonial rule and applied to men and women in a discriminatory way.
