Abstract
This study took a look at utterance types and patterns for the emotion of surprise (驚) among other emotions, with results that were as follows. The utterance types for the emotion of surprise (驚) can be divided into six categories, with 「exclamatory emotion」 showing the most use, and 「emotional expression」 also showing a similar frequency to 「exclamatory emotion」 at 30.7%. The 「reason explanation」 type showed a 14.7% usage, and 16% for 「confirmation requests」. The 「prohibition」 and 「request for improvement」 types were seen to have a 3.3% and 2% usage, respectively. Compared to other emotions, 「exclamatory emotion」 was somewhat greater than 「emotional expression」. The reason underlying this is that among the 10 types of emotions, the emotion of surprise (驚) is one that is felt in the moment, does not last as long as emotions such as happiness (喜) and sadness (哀), and soon fades away. Categorizing the utterance patterns for surprise (驚), single utterance patterns occupied 71.7% of the total, a ratio over twice that of multiple utterance patterns. Within this, 【exclamatory emotion】 showed the most usage at 29.2%, followed by 【emotional expression】 at 18.9%, 【confirmation requests】 at 13.2%, 【reason explanation】 at 5.7%, and 【prohibition】 at 4.7%, in that order. The 【exclamative emotion】 type showed the most usage among utterance types, while in utterance patterns as well 【exclamatory emotion】 was most frequently used as a single utterance. A preference can be seen for exclamatory particles when expressing the emotion of surprise (驚). Multiple utterance patterns show a 28.3% usage among total utterance patterns, while an overall characteristic of different utterance types appearing before and after 【direct emotional expression】 can be seen.
