Abstract

The US-led war on terrorism in Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks has impacted on the situation of South Asia a lot and it has to be concerned when a country pursues her foreign policy towards this region. This paper seeks to understand the changing situation in South Asia after the Afghan War with special reference to India and then, would suggest some foreign policy options on India to South Korean government. By observing the changing situation in South Asia after the Afghan war, it is found that with the enlarging influence of the US on the region, the conflicts between India and Pakistan especially on the Kashmir issue have been drastically reduced. This is also accompanied with India's look east and look ahead policy. Acknowledging these developments, most of ASEAN countries, China and Japan have enhanced cooperation with India in various fields including defence. In this regard, this paper argues that considering India's increasing influence in regional and global affairs, South Korea should enhance its cooperation with India not only in the field of economy but also in the area of politics and defence. It is also South Korea's interests to pay more attention to New Delhi by taking more active steps to establish individual relations with Indian leaders and reorganize the departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. But, for all of these it is essential to educate and train some specialists on India.
