Abstract

Transnational families live most of the time separated from each other, yet hold together and create something that can be seen as a feeling of collective welfare and unity, namely 'familyhood', even across national borders. This study aims at exploring the transnational family ties between Nepalese migrant workers in Gwangju metropolitan city, Korea and their left behind family members in Nepal on the bases of some transnational care practices like remittances, virtual intimacy through ICTs(information and communication technologies), and visit to homeland. Because of the Nepal's longstanding economic deterioration and political instability, migration has become an essential livelihood strategy among many Nepalese families. The monetary remittances of Nepalese migrant workers in Korea highly contribute to the well-being of family members in terms of education, medical treatment, and promotion of living standard. This study also argues that ICTs allow transnational families to connect virtually instead of geographical proximity. In contrast to the scarcity of telephone landline, cell phone adoption in Nepal has been so rapid that having a cell phone is not a luxury in only a few years. Nepalese transnational family members overcome geographical distance and strengthen their belonging and emotional support through utilization of ICTs, In spite of an immense expenditure of money on travel to Nepal, many Nepalese workers, especially married persons try to visit to family members left behind in Nepal. It is said that they regard their visit to family members as a kind of care practices. This study clearly shows that the aforementioned transnational care practices become pivotal to how transnational families maintain their sense of belonging to each other and unity, even across national borders between Korea and Nepal.
