Abstract

Yoga in Yogasūtra means 'to cease mental activity' or 'to give a stop to mental activity'. According to the commentary of Vyāsa Sanskrit, it includes both an existence of the mental activity focused on one object, with all the other activities being in a halt, and a state of entire activities being stopped. Yogasūtra is to give a stop to mental activity, and it sets up yama(social commandments) and niyama(personal commandments) as the first and the second most significant among all eight commandments. Various super-human powers that you can obtain through the observance of the commandments are cited in Yogasūtra, but there are hardly any references to a Buddhist precept, āsana, nor any explanations on the super-human power that comes from the precept. Therefore, the yoga in Yogasūtra is not the one that considers the precept āsana, but the one that emphasizes the ethical code about the society and the individual. Furthermore, Yogasūtra proclaims that you can reach the state of yoga by devoting yourself to the Oṁ, the Absolute being Īśvara, when you do the meditation and repetition in a low tone of the Oṁ. Yoda in Yogasūtra acknowledges the devotion to the absolute being, but that devotion is to be distinguished from the devotion to an object of religious worship. Hence, Yoga in Yogasūtra is ascetic exercises of mind to reach final emancipation that bears no relation to religion.
