Abstract
In this essay, I reviewed critiques of Indian socialism by B. R. Ambedkar. Ambedkar had been struggled for untouchables' right of equality and he had accepted the socialism partially. Then why Ambedkar had been criticized Indian socialists and Marxism?First, the Indian socialists had a poor interpretation of the base and social construct. Ambedkar had been asserted that the caste system must have been regarded as the base that could have changed the superstructure of India. However, socialists merely counted for the mode of production as a substructure. Moreover, Indian socialists had not recognized the specificity of Indian hierarchical system, and tried to adopt Marxism as it is into India, which caused Ambedkar to criticize the socialists. Second problem was who to be overthrown by socialists. It is the capitalist that has generated social contradiction and exploited the proletariat. In India, it is the Brahman who is the exploiting class that is corresponding to such capitalist. Nevertheless, most of the Indian socialists were Brahman caste. And it had provided another factor for Ambedkar to criticize the socialism. Finally, I has been reviewed in this paper why Ambedkar converted to Buddhism while criticizing socialism. India is a country of strong religious traditions differently in other countries. In such circumstance, It is not easy to lead out unity of untouchables with only ideology apart from religion. Ambedkar had been interested in the socialism as a substitute of Hinduism that was discriminating untouchables. But he had been criticized socialism and he expressed the reason why Marxism cannot be the substitute of Hinduism in his speech 'Buddha or Karl Marx'. According to his claim, socialism could be the substitute of Hinduism in the respect of realizing equality, but dictatorship and violence are also included in Socialism. However Buddhism has the conception of peace and mercy as well as the equality that was insisted by socialism. So, he converted to Buddhism that could be the substitute of Hinduism and socialism. Therefore, I think 'Buddha or Karl Marx' can be evaluated to have clarified the justification why he converted to Buddhism.
