Abstract

In this essay, I tried to research into Buddhadasa's dhammic socialism. Especially, I focused on Buddhadasa's basic principles. First principle is restraint. Marxist had been stressed on the fair distribution of wealth but Buddhadasa gave his views that self restraint is considered more important than fair distribution. Second principle is 'the good of whole'. Marxist's view have been concentrated in the dialectics of class struggle and of socio-economic change. Capitalism have been stressed competition and individualism. But Buddhadasa emphasized 'the good of whole'. In his words, human beings are social creatures and our relationship is based on mutual dependence, so we need to be aware of the importance of 'the good of whole'. Third principle is compassion toward all forms of life. Struggles had been important for Marxist to built socialist state. But Buddhadasa criticized "conflict in the world today is a form of insanity, these kinds of attempts to solve the problems of the world are cleaning something muddied water". So he sought to realize of socialistic society through peaceful means, or compassion(metta-karuna). Finally, Buddhadasa gave his views on the political situation in Thai, it was Dictatorial Dhammic Socialism. He talked that the meaning of democracy is very ambiguous, on the other hand dictatorial dhamma raja system is a more ideal than anything. To sum up, Buddhadasa advocated socialism based on the principles of Buddhism, not to be on Marxist's view but to be on the side of society. There have been criticisms on dhammic socialism for Buddhasa didn't bring forward proper system. But I think he showed political philosophies of coexistence and he sought real socialism can apply to Thai and Asia. Also I assess dhammic socialism is a asiatic socialism being in harmony of mind and material.
