Abstract
Merleau-Ponty devoted himself to the study of body, which is called ‘Body Philosophy’ today. This study focuses on two basic concepts of Merleau-Ponty’s body philosophy, that is, ‘a body which is considered as the unity of physical body and mind’ and ‘the object-horizon structure’. The objective of the study is to get a better understanding for these concepts through such concepts as Pañca Kośa and Indra’s Net from Indian religious and philosophical traditions. First, Merleau-Ponty suggests that physical body and mind can not exist independently of each other, and demonstrates it through neurological phenomena like the phantom limb syndrome. Because it helps to understand Merleau-Ponty’s argument about body, this study is interested in Pañca Kośa, one of several Indian religio-philosophical concepts which regard body as the unity of physical body and mind. Whereas Merleau-Ponty does not specifically conceptualize multi-layers of body, the theory of Pañca Kośa divides Śarīra (body in Sanskrit) into five different layers. This theory also gives to these layers specific and descriptive names composed of non-technical words, thereby making the dual aspects of Śarīra, or the physical aspect and spiritual aspect, easily understandable Second, according to the object-horizon structure, when we look at an object, the surrounding objects become the horizon of this object. Merleau-Ponty argues that we can never identify an object without its horizon because an object is based on its horizon and vice versa. He explains the interpenetration of body and world through the concept of object-horizon. But it is not easy to understand this abstract and unfamiliar concept. Therefore, I try to explain the object-horizon structure by using the metaphor of Indra’s Net, an endless net with numberless pearls. An individual pearl in this net reflects all the other pearls including itself, and such a reflection vividly symbolizes the interpenetration of body and world. In conclusion, whereas Western philosophy suffered from a sharp division of physical body and mind, Indian philosophy has maintained long and continuous traditions which consider human body as the continuum of physical body and mind. The concepts of Pañca Kośa and Indra’s Net, developed and elaborated in Indian philosophical traditions since the ancient times, provide an easy access to Merleau-Ponty’s body philosophy through plain, descriptive terms and sophisticated metaphors.
