Abstract

This article examines the debates over the selection of architectural styles to be applied for the construction of New Delhi in the early 1910s and its political implications. On December 12, 1911, King George V, who attended the Durbar held in Delhi, announced the plan to transfer the capital of British India from Calcutta to Delhi. This decision was intended to demonstrate firm commitment to British rule in India while appeasing the fiery sentiment of anti-British colonialism throughout the Bengal region. Immediately after the announcement of the capital relocation decision, there began to appear various voices over the issues including the selection of the site for the new capital, town-planning, and the selection of the architectural styles. Among others, most controversial debates were on the issue of the selection of the architectural styles for the new capital. While fiery debates were going on, the Government of India was working on its own plan. Governor-General Hardinge proposed the Pathan style, an early form of the Mughal architecture, to be applied to the construction of the new capital. He persuaded Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, who were selected as architects for the Government of India, to apply that style of architecture for their buildings. Consequently, many elements of Indian history, myth, symbol were added to the most important buildings of the Government of India, i.e., the Government House and the Secretariats. It should be noted here that whole issues related to the selection of the architectural styles had tremendous political implications. In other words, Hardinge’s proposals for applying Indian motif into the construction of buildings, giving opportunity for Indians to participate in the process of building the new capital through the competition, creating the Studio of Indian Arts for fostering Indian craftsmen, and appointing an Indian as its director, etc. were based on political calculations to demonstrate that the Government of India pushed ahead with the aforementioned issues so that Indian people feel proud of the direct participation in the construction of their own capital on the one hand, and make Indians appreciate the Government of India for its endeavor towards reforms beneficial to Indians themselves, on the other.
