본 논문은 장소 개념에 대한 다각적인 이론적 접근을 통해 장률 감독의 영화 <경주>에서 드러나는 장소성을 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 장소는 단순한 지리적 개념을 넘어, 인간 실존의 본질적인 측면과 깊이 맞닿아 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 영화 속에서 장소가 어떻게 특정한 의미와 정체성을 구성하는지, 그리고 그 장소들이 영화 서사와 어떻게 상호작용하는지를 탐구한다. 또한 지리적 공간이 영화 속에서 어떤 상징성과 의미를 지니며, 이를 통해 장소의 본질을 어떻게 드러내는지를 고찰한다. 이를 위해 영화 <경주>에 등장하는 장소들의 다층적인 서사 구조를 분석하고, 이푸 투안, 에드워드 랠프, 미셸 푸코, 나카무라 유지로, 알라이다 아스만 등의 이론을 토대로 논의를 확장한다. 특히, 경주라는 역사적이고 독특한 장소가 감독의 자기반영적 서사와 죽음의 징후가 어떻게 결합하여 새로운 해석을 끌어내는지에 주목한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the placeness revealed in director Jang Ryul's film "Gyeongju" through a multifaceted theoretical approach to the concept of place. Places go beyond simple geographic concepts and are deeply in contact with essential aspects of human existence. In this context, this study explores how places constitute specific meanings and identities in movies, and how they interact with movie narratives. It also examines what symbolism and meaning geographic space has in the movie and how it reveals the essence of the place through this.To this end, we analyze the multi-layered narrative structure of places in the film "Gyeongju", and expand the discussion based on theories such as Ifu Tuan, Edward Ralph, Michel Foucault, Yujiro Nakamura, and Alida Asman. In particular, we pay attention to how the historical and unique place of Gyeongju combines the director's self-reflective narrative and signs of death to draw a new interpretation.
