Abstract
This paper explores the characteristics of English in the British Isles. The paper discusses differences and similarities of English in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland with reference to its vowel and consonant systems, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The term "British English" has been used to refer to the varieties of English spoken in England, in Great Britain(England, Scotland and Wales), in the British Isles(Great Britain and Ireland), and the British branch of varieties of English(including English in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Africa). British English is spoken with a wide range of accents even though these normally include only Received Pronunciation(RP) and the milder regional accents. Exploring diverse features of British English with focus on English English(in England), Scottish, Welsh, and Irish English, this study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the dynamic and changing English in global society.
