Abstract
In this paper we attempt to account for Middle English Breaking, whereby a series of diphthongs including /ei, au, ou/ appeared. After showing the inadequacy of previous segmental approaches to Middle English Breaking, we will argue that a combination of the enriched theory of representation and the Optimality Theory helps to make sense of Middle English Breaking in a more natural and explicit manner. Specifically, we will argue under the enriched theory of representation that the unique gestural configuration of the sequence 'V + [x, ç, ɫ]', which involves two consecutive vowel gestures within a single rhyme, is responsible for an assimilation process like Middle English Breaking. We will also propose under the Optimality Theory that a few constraints, mostly phonetically- grounded, and their rankings can account for the breaking cases, as well as the non-breaking cases, of Middle English.
