Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the phenomenon of vowel deletion in Tonkawa, English, Hopi, Palestinian Arabic, Tripoli Arabic, and Southeastern Tepehuan from the angle of the realization of homogeneity of target by heterogeneity of process according to McCarthy (2002). In this paper, I will analyze the corelation between vowel deletion and stress phenomenon in individual languages within the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993), based on constraint. As a result, I will reveal that vowel deletion in individual languages occurs to minimize the number of the unparsed syllable, or to create the heavy-syllable-stress foot by the ranking SWP, PARSE-б, MAX-IO in order. By doing so, this paper will provide a more unified and well-motivated explanation why vowel deletion happens rather than how it happens.
