Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the transparency and opacity of stress assignment in vowel insertion. In many languages, including Swahili, Selayarese, Mohawk, Dakota, and Iraqi Arabic, the stress assignment appears to ignore epenthetic vowels, which gives rise to opaque stress patterns. This has provided strong arguments for multi-level derivations, which account for the apparent opacity of epenthetic vowels by inserting them after stress is assigned. Thus, in this paper we argue that the transparency and the opacity of stress assignment in vowel insertion should be explained within the framework of Optimality Theory, based on constraints rather than rules as in Generative Phonology.
