Abstract
The purpose of the study is twofold: first, to analyze the syntactic and semantic nature of the Korean case alternation between the dative case marker '-e' and the accusative case marker '-lul' when cooccurring with particular verbals denoting result, situation, movement, second, to introduce the research results into the theoretical framework of HPSG. The research result reveals that, in case of 'result or situational verbs' occurring together with a patient subject, their complement arguments are assigned with the dative case marker '-e' only if they possess the thematic role, [LOCATIVE]. By contrast, when the complements possess the role of [THEME], their case marker is realized as the accusative suffix '-lul'. The research also reveals that, in the case of 'movement verbs', two thematic roles, [LOCATIVE] and {THEME], are simultaneously required in order for the '-e/lul' case alternation to be permitted to their complements.
