Abstract
Lee, Kwangho. 2006. A Minimalist Account of Multiple Case Marking in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-2, 233-249. Multiple Nominative and Accusative Case markers can occur in Korean but are not allowed to occur freely. A natural question arises here concerning the kinds of constraints involved with the multiple Case marking phenomena. I discuss three different approaches to this question. I discuss how the question can be dealt with under Watanabe's (1993) strong interpretation of Greed Principle and under Chomsky's (1995) suggestion that the mismatch of features cancels the derivation. I point out that these approaches are problematic. The former has a conceptual problem, since it assumes that Case checking occurs even when a Case checker and a checkee do not match in Case features. The latter is problematic too, since it is no more than a stipulation. I go on to suggest that the question can be approached in a more natural and principled way within the framework of Chomsky's (2000, 2001, 2004) theory of Agree, showing that the concept of local c-command plays an important role in Case theory.
