초록

This study explores the implicature in English computer-mediated discourse (CMD) with reference to the linguistic devices. This paper is based on two types of CMD (NS-NS, NS-NNS) with a focus on the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and Instant Message (IM) among native speakers of English (NS) and Korean non-native speakers of English (NNS). It was found that by employing various linguistic devices such as hedges, questions, and repetitions, participants in cyber space produce implied meanings and perform indirect speech acts for various interactional goals. This study confirms that for a successful communication with regard to implicature, participants rely on linguistic as well as social factors, and internal as well as external contexts. It further confirms that NNS’s second language proficiency influences his/her pragmatic competence, namely the ability to comprehend and produce meaning in context. The findings and observations in this study have implications for cross-cultural communication and the teaching of English to speakers of other languages.
