초록

In the literature, there are largely two approaches that represent non-maximality. One is a semantic approach and the other is a pragmatic approach. This paper claims that the semantic approach employing a group individual explains the fact that distributive particles induce a maximality effect. I argue that a maximality effect arises when the pluralization operator evoked by a distributive particle requires a sum antecedent and, in the process, the group individual with a non-maximal reading is ruled out. This finding sheds light on the long debate on the right approach to distributivity and maximality. Furthermore, my claim explains why Chinese dou has been claimed to be a multifunctional device: a distributor, a plurality operator and a maximality operator.
