초록
The purpose of this paper is to argue that major properties of gapping constructions cannot be uniformly accounted for by the across-the board movement analysis proposed by Johnson (2009). In spite of its several advantages, the analysis still has some conceptual and empirical problems. Instead of the structure [TP [PredP [vP vP and vP]]] for gapping constructions, I propose [TP TP and TP]. I have tried to illustrate that gapping is an ellipsis rule of deleting all the remaining materials except for two contrast pairs in a coordinate structure consisting of two (or more) tensed clauses (TP). I conclude that gapping is a post-syntactic operation, on the basis of the empirical considerations that it is sometimes not constituent-dependent, and that it neglects agreement features of the first conjunct for its application. This paper is incomplete, however, in that there still remains a task of dealing with some problems concerning tense absence of the second conjunct and scope ambiguity of a negative operator.
