본 연구는 오늘날 한국사회의 문화유형으로서 개인주의가 어떻게 드러나고 있는지 살펴보기 위해 미디어담론을 분석한 질적 연구다. 한국사회가 전통적인 집단주의에서 개인주의로 변화하고 있는 담론은 개인주의에 바탕을 둔 서구의 문화적 지식의 유입과 세계화의 영향 속에서 유력해 보인다. 그러나 문화는 균일한 형태이기 보다 역동적인 과정이며 문화의 변동 또한 변증법적으로 이루어진다는 관점에서 이러한 예측은 설득력을 갖기 어렵다. 본 연구는 담론이 갖는 실천적 성격을 바탕으로 최근 신문기사 등의 미디어 텍스트가 형성하는 담론을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 오늘날 한국사회의 개인주의는 이기주의와 혼용되기도 하고, 가족의 위기요소, 신세대를 규정하는 특징으로 작용하며, 집단주의와 공존하는 형태의 문화유형으로 나타나고 있었다.
Abstract
This study critically discusses the concept of individualism in Korea through the media discourse analysis. There is a dominant discourse that the cultural value of Korean society has been changed from collectivism to individualism these days due to Western culture and globalization. However, in terms of that culture is a fragile phenomenon and it is constantly changing, it is difficult to describe that Korean culture is becoming individualistic. In media discourse, the individualism appears as egoism, a risk factor on family, a character of young generation, and a new cultural value with collectivism. The findings of this study partly substantiate recent studies pointing to the importance of both individualism and collectivism in varied cultural texts, and support the claim that more attention should be paid to the way and progress in which cultural values of individualism and collectivism coexist in a specific culture.
