제주방언 높임말 첨사의 담화 기능 ― ‘마씀, 양, 예’를 중심으로 ―

Abstract

The honorific expressions in Jeju Dialect are in general made in two ways: grammatical morphemes such as '-u-/-su-' and '-psə', and particles such as 'massum, yang and ye.' Of the two, this paper concerns with the discourse function of the latter. According to this preliminary research, it seems that the frequency of the three particles can be classified in terms of sex and age. According to the observations regarding the difference in frequency between males and females, it follows that massum is a neutral particle in the sense that it is widely used with no significant difference between the two. However, it is shown that the frequency of yang is higher with males than with females, while ye is exclusively used by females. Concerning the frequency of the three particles in accordance with the age difference, it is pointed out that massum is likely to be more frequently used by the older speakers and that yang is used when the hearers are older than the speakers, whereas ye is likely to be more frequently used by the younger generation
