초록

This study aims to examine a) whether Korean language textbooks portray gender bias and b) if so, how and in what manner, and discuss c) what can and should be done to mitigate such gender bias. Two most widely used textbooks in Korean language programs in U.S. colleges and universities are analyzed, using Rifkin's (1998)'s analytical framework. That is, the number of textual appearances of males/females, the number of pictorial appearances of males and females, the number of times males/females speak first, the number of times females/males were subjects or objects of sentences, and the number of adjectives and adverbs used by males and females are examined. The results show that the gender bias was not clearly represented in all the criteria analyzed although there was a tendency of female underrepresentation and stereotyping, most common types of gender bias. Implications of these findings for Korean language teaching and ways to raise awareness of this issue are discussed.
