This paper presents an acoustic analysis of English stop-sonorant sequences spoken by Korean speakers and native speakers of English. One of the major differences between the two groups of speakers is that Koreans tend to apply sonorant assimilation in pronouncing the sequences whereas most of English speakers do not. This phenomenon is attributed to negative transfer from Korean phonology in which sonorant assimilation is a natural process in pronouncing such sequences. Besides the issue of sonorant assimilation, we discuss additional aspects such as the frequency of voicing assimilation, the degree of stop closure, the length of stop closure, and the frequency of vertical spikes.
