This study aims to explore whether cultural understanding can generally help students’ English competence. In this rapidly changing world today, the reasons for learning English vary. English is no longer simply a required subject. The main purpose of studying English for most of the people is to acquire communicative competence. The language learner needs not only linguistic competence, but also the ability to use the English language in a socially acceptable manner. As a result, understanding English is not only acquiring language form, but also understanding its given contexts. This paper focuses on cultural context because adequate communication is impossible without understanding the cultural context of a target language. This is true because language is connected with social and cultural context.
