Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of rehabilitation exercise using virtual reality on strength of lower limbs and dynamic balance for patients with chronic stroke. Thirty six subjects were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. Both groups received treadmill training for 3 session 30 minutes per week during 6 weeks. Experimental group practiced additional exercises using virtual reality that consisted of 3 programs for each 10 minutes. The trunk strengthening, dynamic balance(BBS, TUG) were measured prior to commencement of the exercise programs, and again after 6 weeks, when the programs were completed, in order to establish the effectiveness of both exercise programs. The major results of this study were that virtual reality exercises brought about significant increases in strength of lower limb(p < .05) and dynamic balance(p < .05). We suggest that virtual reality exercise is effective in the improvement for functional recoveries in the persons with chronic stroke. Therefore, the virtual reality exercise is considered to important when the stroke patients are trained in welfare institutions, special schools and rehabilitation centers.
