Abstract

This study was held in an attempt to examine how the augmented reality-based treadmill training affects balance and gait of stroke patients and to compare the differences of its effects with that of the general treadmill training. The 57 patients were divided into two groups: the 29 patients was the augmented reality-based treadmill training group with the head mounted display on their head for 10 minutes; and the 28 patients was the general treadmill training group who executed only treadmill training for 10 minutes. It is found that, in both cases, there is an effect that improves the dynamic balance ability of stroke patients(p<.05). Moreover, it is also found that the augmented reality-based treadmill training is effective in increasing the ability for velocity and cadence, which is the temporal gait measure, and step-length and stride-length, which is the spatial gait measure, and is more effective than the general treadmill training(p<.05). These results suggest that the augmented reality is feasible and suitable for individuals with stroke. Based on the results on the above, It has been verified that the augmented reality based treadmill training has a positive effect on balance and gait function of stroke patients. Thus it leads us to an assumption that the numbers of programs, which use the augmented reality for various rehabilitation purposes, should be further developed in the future.
