Abstract
Recently conducted studies looking at virtual reality-based rehabilitation, the stroke patient's balance, gait, movement, hand and upper extremity function can be effectively proved. In this study was aimed at determining the effect of virtual reality-based exercise program by using a game console(Nintendo Wii) on balance and upper extremity in the stroke patients. 17 chronic stroke patients were randomly divided into two groups; VR group(n=9) and control group(n=8) in H and G hospital in Gwangju. Virtual reality-based games were tennis and boxing which were played 15 minutes each game, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, five weeks were arbitration. The Berg Balance Scale(BBS) and Manual Function Test on upper extremity were measured at before intervention, three weeks and five weeks after intervention. Statistically differences were found between the two groups. The BBS and MFT score were significantly increased in VR group. Based on the results of this study, the application of virtual reality-based game with chronic stroke patients were found to be effective in balance and upper extremity function. Thus, chronic stroke patients based on virtual reality games as the future management program is to show feasibility. The future of virtual reality-based games and applications using a more efficient program development are needed for research.
