Abstract

Blind juveniles control postural sway with the residual systems, consisting of the somatosensory and vestibular systems. Balancing ability in blind juveniles is worse than sighted juveniles. Purpose of this study were to investigate the differences in postural sway between blind juveniles and sighted juveniles and to examine effectiveness of fingertip light contact in reducing postural sway. Twenty two blind juveniles and twenty two sighted juveniles were tested while standing on a force platform under two conditions; no contact(NC), fingertip light contact(FLC) were applied in a random order. Center of pressure displacements were recorded by using a force platform. Postural sway was measured by sway path and sway velocity. FLC resulted in decreased postural sway in the blind and sighted juveniles(p<.05). Interestingly, this stabilizing effect was more accentuated in the blind juveniles. In conclusion, results suggest that the contribution of the haptic cues from the FLC for regulating postural sway increases in blind juveniles. These findings could be the basis of intervention method for improving balance in blind juveniles.
