Abstract

This study was to evaluate the motor developmental characteristics as Gross Motor Function Measure(GMFM) in children with cerebral palsy(CP). Total of 240 children with CP were selected based on predetermined selection criteria among the CP children from three general hospital, one welfare center, and two rehabilitation schools. Measurements of Gross Motor Functional Classification System(GMFCS) and GMFM were evaluated. The results of this study were presented as follows: Firstly, there was significantly different of GMFM in four age groups(p<0.1), especially the age group in 11-13 was higher than age 3-4 group by Post-hoc analysis, also motor development was increased by aging. Secondly, there was significantly different of GMFM in the CP type, especially the spastic and the athetoid type of CP showed that gross motor function was significantly different than the ataxia, the hypotonia, and the mixed type. Thirdly, the premature babies was 108(45%) and fullterm babies was 132(55%). Lastly, there was significantly different of GMFM in GMFCS level, especially mild(GMFCS level Ⅰ) and moderate(GMFCS level Ⅱ, Ⅲ) of CP showed that gross motor function was significantly different than severe(level Ⅳ-Ⅴ). In conclusion, this study suggests that evaluation of the children with CP should be conducted GMFM, and for early intervention needs to severe CP.
