Abstract

This study was conducted to find out if there are any word learning constraints when learning an early word and whether the word learning constraints affect word learning. A whole-object assumption assumes that when a new word is heard, it refers to the whole object itself. Therefore, this study will focus on whole-object assumptions in order to identify age-specific development patterns and to more accurately observe the age of use. Also researcher going to observe age when children use the whole-object assumptions used to acquire new words more accurately. The subjects of the study included 103 children in total: 24 normal children 3 years old, 22 normal children 4 years old, 34 normal children 5 years old and 23 normal children 6 years old. Experiment asked children to select one among 4 pictures(whole stimulus, part of whole stimulus, ambiguous-whole stimulus, part of ambiguous stimulus), when the children hearing a new non-word. As a result, children between the ages of 3 and 6 picked the most ambiguous-whole stimulus when they heard non-words. Children aged 3 and 4 tended to prefer ambiguous-whole stimulus and whole stimulus, while children aged 5 and 6 tended to prefer ambiguous-whole stimulus and part of ambiguous stimulus. This showed that the whole-object assumption was used correctly before the age of 3 and showed a significant difference in preference for stimuli from age 5 as the age increased, making it more powerful to use the whole-object assumptions. This suggests that word learning may be delayed if children over the age of 3 have difficulty using the whole-object assumption. And the results of this study can be used as information about delayed word learning by comparing the use of the whole-object assumption through the standard and average deviation of children between the ages of 3 and 6.
