Abstract
This study investigated language and communication support conditions through in-depth interviews with four speech-language pathologists who have experience providing speech therapy for adults with borderline intelligence. For data collection, Focus Group Interviews (FGI) were conducted, categorizing sub-areas under five themes and defining concepts for each category. The research results classified language and communication characteristics based on the experiences of adults with borderline intelligence into cognitive and academic abilities, semantic areas, pragmatics, and communication attitudes. Difficulties in speech therapy for adults with borderline intelligence were categorized into counseling, diagnosis, and treatment. Areas of focus in speech therapy for adults with borderline intelligence and the need for ongoing goal setting from borderline intelligence in childhood to adulthood were classified into conceptual skills, social skills, and practical skills. Finally, the role of speech-language pathologists was categorized into early detection and provision of treatment, family counseling and education; also included was the development of materials and tools, along with improvement of social awareness for individuals with borderline intelligence. Based on these research findings, it is anticipated that this study will serve as foundational information that will help provide insights into approaches and attitudes for speech-language pathologists to work more closely with adults and specifically those with borderline intelligence in the realm of language and communication therapy.
