Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of performing Hand Motor Skills on improving Daily Living Skills in a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder and whether these skills generalized to other settings. A single 5-year-7-month-old boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder participated, and a delayed multiple baseline design was used. Basic Hand Motor Skills requiring additional practice—grasping, releasing, twisting, and squeezing—were selected. Based on these skills, Daily Living Skills requiring greater independence, including buttoning, pouring water, and brushing teeth, were also chosen. Repetitive practice using appropriate tools and real-life activities was implemented. Task analysis and checklists were used to measure progress. Results showed improvement in both Hand Motor Skills proficiency and Daily Living Skills performance. In particular, pre-training focused on Hand Motor Skills was effective in enhancing both the fluency and generalization of Daily Living Skills, highlighting the importance of hand motor proficiency as a core component of functional independence. Therefore, this study demonstrates that a systematic approach to strengthening foundational motor skills, such as Hand Motor Skills, can be an effective intervention strategy for Daily Living Skills and suggests the need for further research to explore the generalizability of these findings to other children.
