Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of cognitive strategy instruction on the acquisition and maintenance of economic-related functional mathematics skills in middle school students with intellectual disabilities. Seventeen students enrolled in a middle school in Gyeonggi Province participated in the intervention, which focused on calculating the unit price of “1+1” promotional items—a concept frequently encountered in everyday economic contexts. The intervention incorporated a six-stage cognitive strategy instruction model that integrated mnemonic and self-regulated learning strategies. A single-group pretest–posttest–follow-up design was employed to assess the effects. The results revealed significant improvements in the acquisition and maintenance of the target skill, with sustained performance after the intervention. Although generalization skills also improved significantly from pretest to posttest and follow-up, the performance remained below the maximum score, indicating limited generalization. These findings suggest that repeated practice alone may be insufficient for students with intellectual disabilities to generalize learned strategies and highlight the need for instruction that includes diverse contexts and tasks. This study offers practical implications for teaching functional mathematics to promote the economic independence of students with intellectual disabilities.
