Abstract
This study investigated the differences in self-regulated reading strategies based on reading levels and analyzed how self-regulated reading strategies are used through in-depth interviews with readers who are struggling with reading. A total of 215 male and female high school students participated in the study. Among them, three students with insufficient reading comprehension abilities were focus interviewed. The result showed a significant difference in self-regulated reading strategies among 'higher, mid, and lower' reading levels. In particular, for self-efficacy, there were significant differences in all of the 'higher, mid, and lower' groups. In addition, there were statistical differences in ‘rehearsal and elaboration’, and ‘meta-cognitive strategies’ between the 'higher' and 'lower' groups mainly. The interview revealed that the students struggling with reading comprehension had very low self-efficacy and tended to avoid difficult reading tasks. Nevertheless, they showed strong motivation when it comes to understanding difficult content with topics that interested them. In addition, through the interview, the characteristics of each student, such as the type of readers who refused to understand anything as they were not self-motivated and the type of readers who could not reach reading goals due to lack of meta-cognition or agency strategies could be identified. Through this study, it was possible to obtain the implications of the instruction for self-regulated reading strategy and research plan.
