Abstract
Diary “Travel Across Korea, Manchuria and Liaodung Peninsula” was written in 1898, when Garin travelled in Korea. Garin participated in the large research expedition project of Russian Geographical Society, led by A.I. Zvjagintsev. During the project, Garin compiled the Korean fairy tales. Korea was briefly introduced in I.A. Goncharov's “Frigate Pallada” for the first time in Russian Literature. However, it was Garin's “Travel Across Korea, Manchuria, and Liaodung Peninsula,” in which Korea was described in full scale. It covers Korean society and character of Korean people in late 19 century. In this paper, I tried to follow the Garin's creative process of the writing, to find the images of Korea in his work. “Travel Across Korea, Manchuria, and Liaodung Peninsula” is the on-scene report of the experience he had in Korea in 1898. In the book, he narrate the peaceful and serene Korea village life and landscape around Du-Man River, Am-Nok River and Baek-Du Mountain area in this book. Also, he highly appreciate the originality of the Korean folktale and the way Korean people understand the Universe.
