In this paper, I tried to look at Korea's image of russian through 2 reports and 1 book, as “Trip of the Joint Staff of colonel Karneev and lieutenant Mikhaylov across South Korea per 1895∼1896”, “Trip to Korea of the Joint Staff of lieutenant colonel Alftan in December, 1895 and January, 1896”, and Garin-Mikhaylovsky's “Travel Across Korea, Manchuria and Liaotung peninsula”. After the Sino-Japanese War, Russia started actively to collect the information of Korea. Since the diplomatic ties between Korea and Russia in 1884, 1888, Korea's image of russian was depended on the Japanese or European references, but it was come to the independent figures in the 19th century. Garin described that Korea people seemed to be cowardly, week but they had the pure, childlike mind and he set a high value on humor and good nature, marvelous noble character with forgiving, understanding the everything in the Korea's legends and folk tales. In Russian's traveling books in 1895-1898, the their favorable impression for Korean was very great and their sympathetic eyes were shown about the situation of Korean Government that was positioned in the unstable state from both inside and outside circumstances following Japan`s threats and about Korean people suffering from the government officials' plundering and the nobilities' tyranny. Until the Russo-Japanese War and after that, in the Russian references, the sympathetic viewpoints were predominated, especially Russia was the only country that Korea was treated as the 'fairy-tale world', as not the 'prohibition country' or the 'hermit country'. It is that the contribution of Garin-Mikhaylovsky.
