In the 10th century, an internally-integrated Goryeo Gwangjong(光宗) engaged in active diplomacy with China, which at the time was going through a period of tumult known as the ‘Odae-sipguk(五代十國)’ Era. Goryeo formed diplomatic relationships with two of the ‘Odae(五代)’ dynasties, Huju(後周) and Song(宋), and with Namdang(南唐) and Owol(吳越) of ‘Sipguk(十國).’ The 10th century was a period in which diplomacy between Korea and China occurred most frequently in the entire history of Korea. The following thesis addresses the frequency and scale of the diplomatic missions that went between the two countries at the time. An analysis of the exchanged goods revealed that the diplomatic relationship was a militaristic one. The thesis also reveals that Sichan(時贊), formally known as a Chinese active in the diplomacy between Goryeo and Song, was in fact a native of Goryeo. Further, it was revealed for the first time through documentations such as HaewaeSajeongGwanggi(海外使程廣記), SokJeongseokgyorok(大唐保大乙巳歲續貞元釋敎錄), and Jodangjip(祖堂集) that Goryeo was closely engaged with Namdang; in fact, Goryeo’s structural organization was based on documents such as SeongwonKyok(昇元格) and Seongwon Sanjeongjo(昇元刪定條) from Namdang.
Abstract
