Toward a New Explanatory Framework of Neo-Confucianism and East Asian Societies

Now Eurocentrism has been seriously challenged. Historians of East Asia have attempted to write world history based on reciprocal comparison between Europe and East Asia. When world history begins to touch upon the issues of social structure and political power beyond economic history, it is crucial to understand how Confucianism shaped East Asian societies. This paper examines several new representative explanations of the relationship between Confucianism and East Asian societies and clarifies major problematiques in the issue. Through a more historically defined approach to Confucianism and East Asian societies, this paper explores the possibility of developing concepts and categories from historical experiences in East Asia without entirely relying on those of Western social sciences and finding a better explanatory framework for understanding East Asian societies and, eventually, more diverse human experiences on a broader horizon.
