Abstract

This article introduces and translates the epitaph of Yelü Zhongfu with detailed annotations. The epitaph, excavated in 2001, provides records that are absent from extant official historical sources, including uprisings in the northwestern region, Liao’s rule in this area, and Yelü Zhongfu’s activities. Notably, it offers a different account of the rebellion led by Dae Yeonrim, a figure from the remnants of Balhae. According to the epitaph, the uprising occurred in the eighth year of the Taiping era (1028), contrasting with the Official History of Liao and the Official History of Goryeo, which both dated the rebellion to the ninth year of the Taiping era (1029). Upon reviewing the Official History of Liao, Official History of Goryeo, and Extended Continuation to Zizhi Tongjian, it is difficult to conclusively determine whether the rebellion began in 1028. Nevertheless, the differing account in the epitaph suggests that signs of unrest centered around the Balhae remnants may have emerged prior to 1029.
