Abstract

As part of the exterior environment improvement project for Daegu National Museum, this study aimed to vitalize the regional national museum and extend its social functions by improving outdated facilities. In this study, the author took the approach to fulfil the “inclusive museum” policy, presented programs to realize “functional complexation” in the exterior space, and established a master plan based on the conception of spatial modulation. The results of the study are as follows: in the master plan, the exterior space is reorganized into the “front garden space”, “connective space”, and “forest hub space” with a view to ensuring multi-faceted activities at the museum that carries inclusive values and comprehensive experiences in each space. First, the “front garden space” is planned to improve the openness of the existing plaza and green space in the front garden of the museum and further highlight its symbolism. Second, the “connective space” is specialized in connecting between the interior exhibition space and the exterior space, and is presented as a space to be used for outdoor cultural events in consideration of the construction of a new building. Third, the “forest hub space” is planned as a space to offer ‘things to do’ to a range of audiences with a view to conveying the significance of the ‘inclusive museum’ by improving the existing exterior exhibition facilities. The results of this study have significance as a type of landscape design applications to the concept of the ‘inclusive museum’ and are expected to play roles as an example of cultural infrastructure vitalization by identifying specific topics at the regional level.
