Abstract

This study examined the concept of garden tourism and highlighted the importance of accessible tourism in relation to gardens. To support this discussion, we conducted an online review analysis to explore the diversity of tourists attracted to accessible tourism and the physical viewing environment for garden visitors. The analysis revealed that national gardens attract not only disabled tourists but also non-disabled visitors, particularly families with infants and toddlers, as well as international tourists. Furthermore, our analysis of visit convenience, categorized into transportation convenience, movement convenience, walking convenience, and viewing convenience, indicated a notable presence of baby strollers and wheelchairs, emphasizing the importance of mobility. This suggests that national gardens are well-equipped in terms of mobility and accessibility, as outlined in accessible tourism, and are recognized as family-friendly tourist destinations. Additionally, we found that walking convenience was at a high level, indicating that the physical environment—such as road pavement, decks, and ramps—supports mobility for walking in gardens. Thus, through online reviews, we confirmed the convenience of visits and viewing for diverse visitor groups, reinforcing the notion that the importance of tourist diversity and the physical environment associated with accessible tourism can be effectively applied to gardens. To enhance garden tourism, we also discussed the necessity of incorporating universal design, a practical approach to accessible tourism, into garden spaces.
