Abstract
Since the implementation of local autonomy, regional festivals across the country have faced sustainability crises due to financial difficulties, declining participation, and failure to differentiate. While existing research has focused on input factors such as festival quality, identity, and participation, there has been relatively insufficient exploration of how participants' perceptions of the actual effects created by festivals influence sustainability perception. This study empirically examined the impact of participants' perception of festival effects on festival sustainability perception and the mediating role of satisfaction in this process. The research targeted 449 local residents who participated in the Muju Firefly Festival. Festival effect perception was composed of four dimensions: economic, social, marketing, and tourism effects, while sustainability perception was structured around economic, environmental, and sociocultural aspects. Satisfaction was measured as overall satisfaction level, and bootstrapping analysis was conducted to verify the mediating effect. The analysis results showed that, first, festival effect perception had a significant positive effect on festival satisfaction (β=.671, p<.001), explaining 45.0% of satisfaction variance. Second, festival effect perception had a strong direct positive effect on sustainability perception (β=.861, p<.001), explaining 74.2% of sustainability perception variance. Third, festival satisfaction had a significant positive effect on sustainability perception (β=.685, p<.001), explaining 46.9% of the variance. Fourth, bootstrapping analysis revealed that festival satisfaction partially mediated the relationship between festival effect perception and sustainability perception (indirect effect=.1305, 95% CI [.0730, .1959]). This indicates the psychological mechanism through which festival effect perception is transformed into sustainability perception through satisfaction.
