초록

This paper aims to analyze the semantic opposition of prepositions up and down. I can find many phenomena of semantic opposition of the two prepositions. Interestingly enough, I also find some synonymy between these two prepositions. First, I describe what the opposition is. Opposition can be divided into several categories: good points and bad points in business, upward and down swings in golf, win and failure in the golf game, gradual and non-gradual oppositions, converses, and directional opposition. I present the characteristics of these oppositions. Prepositions up and down are the examples of directional oppositions. I look into the semantic structures of prepositions related to the orientation, especially those of up and down. I accept the polysemy approach. According to the polysemy approach, several meanings associated with one preposition have some relationship with each other in some ways. According to our account of polysemy, one linguistic form is paired not with a single meaning, but with the network of distinct but related meanings at the conceptual level. Therefore, meanings associated with one linguistic form constitute the semantic network. Of the various meanings of up and down, most of the meanings are opposite to each other, but a few of the meanings are synonymous: completion meaning and closing meaning.
