초록
Phonological universals are prevalent patterns attributed to natural factors of speech sounds of human, and the systems of consonants in various languages of the world are some reflection of them. Though they look like different from one another superficially, there are common factors in them, which we call ‘universals'. In this paper, we will discuss the consonant systems of 3 languages of Southeast Asia, Malay, Thai, and Burmese, in terms of these universals mainly based on the UCLA Phonological Segment Inventory Database.
